How to Prepare Your Soil for Healthier Plants
Two gardens can be planted with identical plants in the same week and look completely different by August. The usual explanation isn't skill, sunlight or luck — it's what's happening in the first 30cm below the surface. Soil holds water, air, nutrients and an enormous population of organisms that plants depend on. Get it right and plants largely look after themselves. Get it wrong and you'll spend the season compensating with feed and hosepipe. Here's how to assess what you've got and improve it properly.
The short answer
Good soil preparation comes down to four things: find out what type of soil you have, check how it drains, add organic matter generously, and keep the surface covered. Almost everything else is refinement.
You do not need to double-dig, and in most gardens you shouldn't.
Identify what you're working with
The squeeze test

Take a handful of moist soil from about 15cm down and roll it between your palms.

Clay dominates large parts of southern and central England. Chalk runs through the Downs and Chilterns. Peaty soils appear in parts of the Fens and Somerset Levels. Sandy soils are common in Norfolk, Surrey heathland and much of coastal Britain.
The drainage test
Dig a hole roughly 30cm deep and 30cm wide. Fill it with water and let it drain completely, then fill it again and time it.
- Under 4 hours — free-draining, possibly too fast
- 4 to 12 hours — healthy drainage
- Over 24 hours — poor drainage needing attention
Testing pH
A simple pH test kit gives you a usable figure in minutes. Most garden plants prefer 6.0 to 7.0.
- Below 6.0 (acidic) — suits rhododendrons, camellias, blueberries, heathers
- Around 6.5 to 7.0 — suits most vegetables and ornamentals
- Above 7.5 (alkaline) — suits lavender, clematis, dianthus, many Mediterranean herbs
Test several spots; results vary across a single garden. Rather than fighting your pH, it's usually far easier to choose plants that suit it — or grow acid-lovers in containers of ericaceous compost.
Improving your soil
Heavy clay
Clay is genuinely fertile. Its problem is structure, not nutrition.
- Work when the soil is moist but not wet. Walking on saturated clay compacts it badly.
- Spread 5–8cm of well-rotted compost or manure over the surface each autumn.
- Add coarse grit at roughly 10 litres per square metre in areas where drainage is poorest.
- Consider raised beds where waterlogging is persistent — often the most practical answer.
- Never add sand alone to clay. In small quantities it can make the problem worse.
Clay improves gradually. Expect meaningful change over two or three seasons rather than one.
Sandy soil
The opposite problem: water and nutrients drain straight through.
- Add organic matter twice yearly, in spring and autumn
- Mulch thickly to slow evaporation
- Feed little and often during the growing season rather than in one heavy dose
- Grow green manures such as phacelia or field beans over winter to hold nutrients in place
Chalky soil
- Add generous organic matter to increase moisture retention
- Accept the alkalinity and plant accordingly
- Mulch heavily, as thin chalky soils dry rapidly in summer
The no-dig approach

Digging inverts soil layers, breaks fungal networks and brings dormant weed seeds to the surface. The no-dig method avoids all three.
How to start:
- Cut existing weeds down to ground level — don't dig them out.
- Lay plain cardboard over the area, overlapping edges and removing tape.
- Spread 8–10cm of compost on top.
- Plant directly into the compost layer.
- Add 3–5cm of fresh compost each autumn.
Perennial weeds like couch grass and bindweed may need a full season under cardboard before they give up. For most beds, though, no-dig delivers healthier soil with markedly less effort — which is why it suits gardeners short on time, and pairs well with a low-maintenance garden.
Compost and mulch: the practical difference
Compost is incorporated or laid as a soil improver, feeding soil life and improving structure.
Mulch is a surface layer that suppresses weeds, retains moisture and moderates temperature.
Well-rotted compost does both.
Good mulching materials:
- Garden compost — free, balanced, ideal for beds
- Well-rotted manure — rich; must be at least a year old
- Leaf mould — excellent conditioner, low in nutrients
- Bark chips — long-lasting, best for paths and around shrubs
- Gravel — for Mediterranean plantings and alpines
Applying mulch:
- Apply 5–8cm deep
- Mulch onto moist soil, ideally after autumn or spring rain
- Keep it 5cm clear of stems and trunks to prevent rot
- Top up annually
Common mistakes to avoid
Working wet soil. Treading on saturated clay destroys structure and creates a compacted pan that takes years to recover. If soil sticks to your boots, stay off it.
Using fresh manure. Un-rotted manure scorches roots and can carry weed seeds. It needs at least twelve months to break down.
Adding lime without testing. Lime raises pH. Applied unnecessarily it locks up nutrients such as iron and manganese, causing yellowing leaves.
Relying on fertiliser instead of organic matter. Feed corrects deficiencies; it does nothing for structure, drainage or water-holding capacity.
Leaving soil bare over winter. Rain compacts exposed soil and leaches nutrients. Mulch it or sow a green manure.
Expecting instant results. Soil improvement is cumulative. The compost you spread this autumn shows its full effect next summer.
A simple annual soil routine
- Autumn: Spread compost over beds; sow green manures on empty ground
- Winter: Leave heavy soil alone; let frost break down clods naturally
- Spring: Lightly rake in surface compost; test pH every few years
- Summer: Top up mulch on beds and containers during dry spells

Frequently asked questions
How much compost should I add to a bed?
Around 5cm across the surface annually for established beds, or 8–10cm when starting a new no-dig bed. For a 2m x 1m bed, 5cm equates to roughly 100 litres.
Can I improve clay soil in a single season?
You'll see improvement, but not transformation. One autumn application of compost makes spring digging easier; three consecutive years produces genuinely workable soil.
Do I need to test my soil pH every year?
No. Every three to four years is ample unless you're growing acid-loving plants or have recently limed. Test more often if plants show unexplained yellowing.
Is shop-bought topsoil worth buying?
For filling raised beds or levelling, yes — look for graded topsoil rather than unscreened. For improving existing beds, compost delivers far more benefit per pound spent.
